Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is a condition that affects 1 in every 691 live births.  The total number of births in Georgia is approximately 142,256 per year, based on the National Center for Health Statistics (2005).  It is estimated that 194 babies are born with Down syndrome each year in Georgia, with approximately half of these born in the Metropolitan Atlanta area.  There are an estimated 2,400 to 3,000 individuals of all ages with Down syndrome in the Metropolitan Atlanta area.

The diagnosis of Down syndrome completely changes the lives of many families who are suddenly faced with challenges related to genetics, medical care, surgical procedures, and developmental/educational issues.  Often overwhelmed by an unexpected diagnosis, parents can struggle to understand what the future will hold for their newborn.  At the same time, they may struggle to find necessary services and figure out how to pay for them.  Many families have limited understanding of Down syndrome and existing resources.  Families need to be connected to a medical home that is sensitive to their needs and to be connected to a parent support network.  It is to meet these needs that the Down Syndrome Association of Atlanta exists.
