Opportunities for People with Down Syndrome

There are programs available for people in all stages of development of Down syndrome. These include:

Early intervention programs that start at birth

Preschool programs

Free appropriate public education in the least restrictive
environment

Therapy

Employment training

Incorporated into these programs are speech, physical, occupational and music therapy, and educational approaches that lead the individual toward greater independence. Given the opportunity to develop their individual potential, people with Down syndrome have a greater chance of becoming integral members of their community.

Parents and other family members are encouraged to participate in support groups and organizations that will help them to understand the needs and potential of the family members with Down syndrome. One such local organization is the Down Syndrome Association of Atlanta.
