Physical Characteristics

There are many variations in the physical characteristics of Down syndrome. No one person has all the possible features, and any single feature can also be found in people who don't have Down syndrome.

Some of the characteristics that might be noticeable in persons with Down syndrome include:

Low muscle tone

Almond shaped eyes with small folds at the inner corner

Small mouth that may cause the tongue to protrude or appear larger

Single crease across the palm

Double jointedness

Flat or slightly depressed nasal bridge

There's No Profile for People Who Have Children with
Down Syndrome

A child with Down syndrome can be born to anyone, regardless of age, race, socio-economic status or where you live. Down syndrome occurs in approximately one out of every 800 births in every country of the world.

People with Down Syndrome are Just Like You and Me.

People with Down syndrome are more like average persons than they are different. First and foremost they are individuals with their own personalities. They have unique talents, characteristics, abilities and disabilities, just like everyone. They are brothers, sisters, husbands, wives and friends. They work in banks, schools, offices and restaurants.
