Conferences

The Down Syndrome Association of Atlanta (DSAA) Fall Conference was held on Saturday, November 21, 2009 from 10:00 - 3:00 at the First Presbyterian Church of Peachtree City.  The topic was literacy, with presenters Melanie Leyva-Abad, an experienced special eduction teacher and assistive technology specialist in the Atlanta area, and Dr. Cynthia Jones, DSAA Executive Director, who holds a Ph.D. in Early Childhood/Special Education.  Topics included looking at what is involved in learning to read, how parents can help the process, and very practical ideas for reading activities at home.

The second track at the Fall Conference was especially for new families:  The New Families' Seminar.  There were workshops on early intervention, the Emory Down Syndrome Clinic, DSAA, therapy basics, financial planning, and a very brief overview of the Katie Beckett/Deeming Waiver.
