SupportIndividuals with Down syndrome and their families benefit from a wide array of services and supports. The Down Syndrome Association of Atlanta offers a variety of programs to support families. The First Call Ambassadors program provides information to medical providers about prenatal testing and how to share a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome with expectant parents as well as information specifically designed for expectant parents themselves. The Parent Liaison Project ensures that families of newborns with Down syndrome receive information from the birth hospital. In addition, the Parent Liaisons upon request contact new parents who want to meet a parent who has a child with Down syndrome. DSAA provides financial support to the Emory Down Syndrome Clinic in the Department of Human Genetics at Emory University to help maintain a comprehensive clinic that serves children newborn to age seven. Local networking groups in communities throughout the Atlanta area offer opportunities for play groups, parent education, and community-based social events. DSAA also offers social activities for the entire membership (Spring Social and Holiday Party). DSAA provides financial support to the Adult Down Syndrome Clinic that is operated by the Institute for the Study of Disadvantage and Disability (ISDD), offering comprehensive clinical and consultative services to adolescents and adults with Down syndrome and their families. |
